StreetGames

StreetGames is a programme designed to increase the sports participation levels of young people, who are less receptive to traditional sports opportunities by making sport and physical activity opportunities accessible in local communities.

During 2010 and 2011 spear conducted an evaluation which explored how ‘doorstep sport’ can reach children and young people who are less interested in traditional sports. It also explored the extent to which an intervention (which provides young people with a variety of sporting opportunities in their local area at a time and cost appropriate to them) has the potential to bridge the gap that exists between informal childhood activity and play and more formal sport activities.

Key Findings

  • StreetGames sessions reached key target groups of disadvantaged young people, with former participants now taking on leadership roles in delivering StreetGames projects
  • For some of the young people, StreetGames sessions provided their only opportunity to take part in sports sessions outside of school or college
  • Clear evidence suggested that StreetGames provided something distinctive and therefore additional to traditional organised sport
