Education Institutions’ Engagement with London 2012 Opportunities

In 2011 and 2012 spear was commissioned by Podium, the Further and Higher Education unit for the Games to explore how institutions could engage with related stakeholders from the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in order to boost opportunities that arose from the Games.

The project sought to explore activities that were underway in the sector and gain a clearer understanding of the key legacy challenges and enablers experienced. The research surveyed 476 Further and Higher Education stakeholders across the UK.

Key Findings

  • Two thirds of Universities and Further Education Colleges expected to secure tangible legacies from the Games, and over 90% of the Further and Higher Education sector were, or planned to be involved in Games related activity
  • The evaluation helped to increase legacy outcomes through identification of practical ways in which Further and Higher Education institutions could be supported to maximise opportunities presented in the pre and post-Game periods
