{"id":670,"date":"2012-09-04T09:37:23","date_gmt":"2012-09-04T08:37:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.canterbury.ac.uk\/centre-for-sport-physical-education-and-activity-research\/?p=670"},"modified":"2026-01-27T11:19:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T11:19:27","slug":"the-olympic-physical-activity-sport-and-health-legacy-project-opash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.canterbury.ac.uk\/centre-for-sport-physical-education-and-activity-research\/the-olympic-physical-activity-sport-and-health-legacy-project-opash\/","title":{"rendered":"The Olympic Physical Activity, Sport and Health Legacy Project (OPASH)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Commissioned by the Department of Health,\u00a0<em>spear\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0award winning worldwide systematic review of research and practice evidence had a significant impact on the implementation of the Government\u2019s 2012 Legacy Action Plan, setting out plans to achieve post-Olympic targets in a range of areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>spear<\/em>\u00a0provided evidence for the processes that might be harnessed to use the London 2012 Games to encourage physical activity and sport participation, and identified target groups.<br><br>The OPASH Legacy research conducted by\u00a0<em>spear<\/em>\u00a0was awarded the prestigious accolade of a Bronze award at the Podium Awards, an inaugural celebration recognising the very best of London 2012 projects across further and higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Findings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For current or lapsed sports participants, the Government\u2019s Legacy Action Plan needs to capitalise on the \u2018demonstration effect\u2019 (athletes acting as role models to inspire increased sport participation) and boost the local range and availability of new sports activities particularly less traditional ones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the sedentary and least active, informal physical activity participation in the community can be encouraged by capitalising on \u2018festival effects\u2019 that promote informal celebratory involvement at events that do not necessarily involve participation in Olympic and Paralympic sports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use should be made of the national platform of celebration by promoting locally-owned and culturally relevant 2012 \u2018festival effects\u2019.
