{"id":522,"date":"2016-06-30T13:46:24","date_gmt":"2016-06-30T12:46:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.canterbury.ac.uk\/centre-for-sport-physical-education-and-activity-research\/?p=522"},"modified":"2026-01-27T11:18:35","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T11:18:35","slug":"ya-peer-leader-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.canterbury.ac.uk\/centre-for-sport-physical-education-and-activity-research\/ya-peer-leader-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"YA Peer Leader Programme"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This project involved an evaluation of the national YA Peer Leader Programme aimed to increase participation among less active young people through peer-led activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme aimed to develop leadership skills, increase participation in the least active and enhance teachers\u2019 competence and understanding to drive the leadership pathway through training and peer-led activity.&nbsp;<em>spear<\/em>&nbsp;was commissioned by Youth Sport Trust to evaluate the delivery and impact of the programme across 200 schools across England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Survey returns from over 2,100 participants showed the programme significantly increased the physical activity levels, physical literacy, social, emotional and individual development, opportunities and awareness of primary participants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The percentage of primary participants achieving 60 daily active minutes increased from 38% to 46%, resulting in 442 children newly meeting CMO guidelines for physical activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over 90% of primary staff but less than two-thirds of secondary staff (62%) believe the programme helped participants achieve 60 active minutes every day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engaging in peer-led activities was seen by around 90% of school staff to have increased participants\u2019 confidence, social skills, sense of belonging and knowledge of healthy lifestyles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around four-fifths of school staff (~83%) believed the programme increased participants\u2019 awareness of activity and leadership opportunities and raised aspirations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Date:&nbsp;<\/strong>2014 &#8211;
