{"id":386,"date":"2017-09-03T12:20:13","date_gmt":"2017-09-03T11:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.canterbury.ac.uk\/centre-for-sport-physical-education-and-activity-research\/?p=386"},"modified":"2026-01-27T11:18:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T11:18:03","slug":"targeted-populations-leadership-interventions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.canterbury.ac.uk\/centre-for-sport-physical-education-and-activity-research\/targeted-populations-leadership-interventions\/","title":{"rendered":"Targeted Populations Leadership Interventions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This programme compromised several training initiatives aimed at increasing the number of young people in specific populations (BAME, EAL and SEND) participating in and leading sport and physical activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through opportunities to develop and apply leadership skills in schools and communities, the programme aimed to enhance participants\u2019 health, wellbeing and individual development, increase the diversity and accessibility of young leaders and inspire the engagement of peers. Leadership projects comprised Step into Sport Inclusive Leadership events, Young Leader Training, Future Sport Leaders training events, Leadership Insight Projects and Primary Active Leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Findings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Survey returns from over 2,100 participants show that the programme had significantly improved the physical activity levels, physical literacy, social, emotional and individual development, opportunities and awareness of primary participants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The percentage of primary participants achieving 60 daily active minutes had increased from 38% to 46%, resulting in 442 children newly meeting CMO guidelines for physical activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engaging in peer-led activities was seen by around 90% of school staff to have increased participants\u2019 confidence, social skills, sense of belonging and knowledge of healthy lifestyles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The development of Peer Leaders\u2019 skills and attributes is supported by increased opportunities to coach sport (+40%), plan sessions (+38%) and lead activities (+46%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The majority of school staff believed the programme had added value to schools\u2019 healthy lifestyle offer (80%), PE delivery (81%) and sport provision (85%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Date:&nbsp;<\/strong>2016 &#8211;
