{"id":246,"date":"2021-07-30T11:17:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-30T10:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.canterbury.ac.uk\/centre-for-sport-physical-education-and-activity-research\/?p=246"},"modified":"2026-01-27T11:16:29","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T11:16:29","slug":"bmx-legacy-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.canterbury.ac.uk\/centre-for-sport-physical-education-and-activity-research\/bmx-legacy-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"BMX Legacy Programme"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The BMX Legacy Programme aims to enhance activity levels, health behaviours and wellbeing through the provision of BMX opportunities in \u2018hard to reach\u2019 communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme was launched in 2011 in partnership with five London Olympic and Paralympic host Boroughs. In 2014 Access Sport secured additional funding to expand delivery to an additional ten schools. <em>spear <\/em>was commissioned to support the development of a robust evidence base aligned to key government strategies and to inform the future of the programme through monitoring and evaluation guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019&nbsp;<em>spear<\/em>&nbsp;was commissioned again to evaluate the programme annually for 3 years. The current evaluation draws upon quantitative methods to explore who was engaging with the programme and how the programme impacted participants\u2019 wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Findings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Significant increases were evident in the activity levels of young people. These increases occurred between weeks 1 and 12 of engagement, and between week 1 and the 12-week follow-up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Significant increases were also evident in the percentage of young people who \u2018take part in 30 mins of sport and\/or physical activity, outside school, at least once in the past week\u2019 between weeks 1 (62%) and 12 (73%), week 12 (73%) and 12-week follow-up (86%), and week 1 (62%) and 12-week follow-up (86%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The proportion of young people \u2018active\u2019 or \u2018fairly active\u2019 had increased over the programme, and the proportion of young people \u2018less active\u2019 had decreased<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improvements were evident in young people\u2019s attitudes to and perceptions of physical activity since taking part in the programme. Young people now say: they now do more activity or sport, want to do more activity or sport and ride a bike more since taking part in the programme<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A significant increase was evident in the percentage of young people who think \u2018being healthy and active is important between weeks 1 (69%) and 12 (70%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Significant, incremental increases were evident in the percentage of young people who \u2018can ride a bike\u2019 and \u2018feel confident riding a bike\u2019 between weeks 1 and 12<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boys were significantly more likely to take part in 30 minutes of sport and\/or physical activity, outside school, at least once in the past week and to think they are good at these activities. However, girls were more likely to enjoy trying new activities and being with other people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
